To address this challenge, we integrate a compact, reconfigurable reaction cell featuring electrochemical functionality with high-resolution NMR spectroscopy. We demonstrate the operation of this system by monitoring the activity of enzymes immobilized in chemically distinct layers within a multi-layered chitosan hydrogel assembly. As a benchmark, we observed the parallel activities of urease (Urs), catalase (Cat), and glucose oxidase (GOx) by monitoring reagent and product concentrations in real-time. Simultaneous monitoring of an independent enzymatic process (Urs) together with a cooperative process (GOx + Cat) was achieved, with chemical conversion modulation of the GOx + Cat process demonstrated by varying the order in which the hydrogel was assembled.Over the last decades, the assessment of alcohol cue-reactivity gained popularity in addiction research, and efforts were undertaken to establish neural biomarkers. This attempt however depends on the reliability of cue-induced brain activation. Thus, we assessed test-retest reliability of alcohol cue-reactivity and its implications for imaging studies in addiction. We investigated test-retest reliability of alcohol cue-induced brain activation in 144 alcohol-dependent patients over 2 weeks. We computed established reliability estimates, such as intraclass correlation (ICC), Dice and Jaccard coefficients, for the three contrast conditions of interest ‘alcohol’, ‘neutral’ and the ‘alcohol versus neutral’ difference contrast. We also investigated how test-retest reliability of the different contrasts affected the capacity to establishing associations with clinical data and determining effect size estimates. Whereas brain activation, indexed by the constituting contrast conditions ‘alcohol’ and ‘neutral’ separately, displayed overall moderate (ICC > 0.4) to good (ICC > 0.75) test-retest reliability in areas of the mesocorticolimbic system, the difference contrast ‘alcohol versus neutral’ showed poor overall reliability (ICC less then 0.40), which was related to the intercorrelation between the constituting conditions. Data simulations and analyses of craving data confirmed that the low reliability of the difference contrast substantially limited the capacity to establish associations with clinical data and precisely estimate effect sizes. Future research on alcohol cue-reactivity should be cautioned by the low reliability of the common ‘alcohol versus neutral’ difference contrast. We propose that this limitation can be overcome by using the constituent task conditions as an individual difference measure, when intending to longitudinally monitor brain responses.The synthesis of ammonia (NH3 ) through the electrochemical reduction of molecular nitrogen (N2 ) is a promising strategy for significantly reducing energy consumption compared to traditional industrial processes. Herein, we report the design of a series of monovacancy and divacancy defective graphenes decorated with single 3d transition metal atoms (TM@MVG and TM@DVG; TM=Sc-Zn) as electrocatalysts for the nitrogen-reduction reaction (NRR) aided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. By comparing energies for N2 adsorption as well as the free energies associated with *N2 activation and *N2 H formation, we successfully identified V@MVG, with the lowest potential of -0.63 V, to be an effective catalytic substrate for the NRR in an enzymatic mechanism. Electronic properties, including Bader charges, charge density differences, partial densities of states, and crystal orbital Hamilton populations, are further analyzed in detail. We believe that these results help to explain recent observations in this field and provide guidance for the exploration of efficient electrocatalysts for the NRR.
The aim of this study was to evaluate sepsis on undergraduate programmes in medicine (BMBS), dentistry (BDS) and dental therapy (BScDTH) at a university in England.
The study was carried out at the Faculty of Health, University of Plymouth. Questionnaires consisting of a series of closed and open-ended items were designed for students and faculty by a group of academics. Following a pilot, participants were invited to complete the questionnaires online. Data collection and analyses were completed over a period of 3months.
A total of 71students responded, including 43 were on the BDS programme, 21 on BMBS and 7 on BScDTH. The vast majority were aged between 18 and 24years old (n=61), with 9 reporting being between 25 and 44years old. Of the 14staff who responded, 13 were aged between 35 and 54years old, with one respondent reporting being aged 25-34. The participants reported their perceptions regarding the teaching and clinical exposure of students to sepsis patients; availability of resources for students and patients to raise sepsis awareness.
