Semi-structured interviews were the main data collection tools used in the studies that were reviewed. Data from the selected articles were extracted and synthesised. Results The dominant themes that emerged from the review were (1) fear of stigmatisation; (2) gaps in policy implementation; (3) experiences vary across departments; and (4) self-determination and family support as success factors. Conclusion An important aspect in the transformation of higher education institution is to ensure the closing of the disjuncture between policy and implementation in support of students with SLD. © 2020. The Authors.Background Despite its acceptability, the term disability has not been able to shirk the sense of incompleteness, lack, deprivation and incapacitation embodied in the prefix ‘dis-‘. The current wave of anti-discrimination on disability issues, calls for constant re-examination of the language and the appellations we use in respect of people with disabilities. Objectives The aim of this study is to subject the term disability to some relevancy litmus test with a view to prevent it from acquiring Lyotard’s ‘grand narrative’ and to propose and argue for the term ‘differently abled’ because of its transformative and anti-discriminatory slant. Method The study took the form of a literature review using the optic of Derrida’s hierarchy of binaries and the Sesotho proverb, ‘Bitso-lebe-ke seromo’, (A bad name is ominous) to explore the connotations of the term disability as a disenfranchising social construct. Results Read through the lens of Derrida’s idea of difference, disability as a concept has no inherent meaning and its meaning derives from its being differentiated from other concepts. Viewed through the lens of Bitso-lebe-ke seromo and read in the context of its deep symbolical significance, the term disability holds immense spiritual power. Conclusion The study concludes that the term disability or disabled is exclusionary, stigmatizing, and anti-transformational. As such it embodies imperfection, incapacitation and inferiority. This further implies that schools must adjust all systems of teaching and learning to accommodate all learners regardless of their diverse needs. The reduction of educational inequalities through inclusive practices is aimed at supporting the accomplishment of academic outcomes for all. Learners presenting with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) place specific requirements on teachers, particularly when they find themselves in mainstream classrooms. Objectives This study focused on the learning support strategies used by recently qualified teachers in accommodating learners with NDDs in mainstream classrooms in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Method A qualitative approach was used to explore the support strategies used by recently qualified teachers in mainstream classrooms when dealing with learners with NDDs. Purposive sampling was used to select six recently qualified teachers from different mainst.Background Bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy (BMAT) are widely performed in adults to evaluate haematological and malignant conditions. However, the diagnostic yield from the procedure in unselected patients in the South African public sector has not previously been described. Objectives We identified the main indications and most common diagnoses encountered for BMAT and described the demographic and blood profiles of patients, including HIV-positive patients, who had undergone the procedure at a tertiary hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. Methods We retrospectively reviewed laboratory data from January 2016 to December 2016 for all patients aged ≥ 13 years who underwent the procedure and stratified findings by demographic data. Results Among 120 BMAT biopsies studied, 80 (67%) cases were performed to evaluate suspected malignancy and a further 40 (33%) cases for non-malignant indications. The main indications for bone marrow examination were cytopenias 38 (32%), lymphoma 35 (29%), leukaemia 21 (18%), and multiple myeloma 17 (14%). BMAT results revealed that 60 cases (50%) were malignant in origin, 30 cases (25%) were non-malignant and 30 cases (25%) were classified as normal. The common diagnoses were leukaemia, 24 (20%); multiple myeloma, 16 (13%) and lymphoma, 13 (11%). Cases aged ≥ 50 years were more likely to have a malignant diagnosis (odds ratio 5.8 (95% confidence interval 2.2-17.1) p-value less then 0.001). Conclusion The diagnostic yield of BMAT was high, with significant abnormalities detected in three quarters of cases. Haematological malignancy was the more common diagnosis. Increasing age was associated with an increase in reporting of haematology malignancy. © 2020. The Authors.Purpose of Review Highlight developments in T and B cell biology that are helping elucidate the mechanisms underlying CD28 pathway blockade-mediated inhibition of alloantibodies in transplantation, and discuss recent clinical observations on the impact of belatacept on de novo and established HLA antibodies. Recent Findings The identification of T follicular helper cells as the CD4+ T cell subset required for optimal humoral immunity, along with newly identified roles for CD28 and the B7 molecules on B cell lineage cells has begun to pave the way for improved understanding and discovery of the mechanisms of CD28 costimulation blockade-mediated antibody inhibition. There has been resurgent clinical interest in the ability of belatacept to attenuate alloantibody responses. New reports have continued to document its ability to prevent de novo antibody responses, and more recent studies have surfaced exploring its potential to control nascent or pre-existing HLA antibodies. Summary A growing understanding of the mechanisms of anti-CD28-mediated alloantibody inhibition and continued clinical successes will guide the clinical optimization of belatacept and next generation CD28 blockers to prevent and reduce alloantibodies over the long-term.
