Energy service companies (ESCOs) have emerged to carry out energy efficiency retrofit projects, playing an essential role in mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in China. However, it remains unclear how exactly ESCOs contribute to CO2 mitigation during urbanization and industrialization. We conducted regression analyses on data collected in 29 provinces in China as the first case study to investigate the moderating effect of ESCOs in relationships between urbanization, industrialization, and CO2 emissions. The results indicate that urbanization had a significantly negative influence on CO2 emissions. In contrast, industrialization displayed a statistically significant positive impact on CO2 emissions. ESCOs have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between industrialization, urbanization, and CO2 emissions. The analysis also revealed that ESCOs have a better performance in areas with lower industrialization and greater urbanization. ESCOs may invest more in regions with limited ESCO activities and huge CO2 emission reduction demand, while energy-saving technology innovation should be advocated in regions with sufficient ESCO activities.There is a growing interest in the use of adsorbent nanoparticles to mitigate the toxic effects of pollutants in natural matrices. However, due to their small size, nanoparticles have the potential to transport and disseminate contaminants adsorbed on their surfaces into environmental compartments with greater risk to human, animal, or plant health. This potential consequence of nanoparticle application remains largely unstudied. Here, we studied the application of three adsorbents, including zeolite (Z, micrometric size), nanomagnetite (Mt), and a nanomagnetite-zeolite composite (MtZ) intended to mediate arsenic toxicity in hydroponic tomato cultures. Adsorption studies showed an arsenate adsorption sequence of MtZ (6.2 mg g-1) ≥ Mt (4.7 mg g-1) ≫ Z (0.3 mg g-1). Tomatoes grown under the Mt condition demonstrated the lowest growth rate (4.2 cm), corresponding to a 45% decrease compared to the control (7.6 cm), as well as the highest oxidative stress level (0.024 μmol g-1) as indicated by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, almost twice the control (0.014 μg g-1). Tomatoes grown under MtZ conditions showed a 22% decreased growth (5.9 cm) but MDA levels (0.012 μmol g-1) were comparable to the control. Together, these results suggest that Mt at the nanometric size could obstruct channels in the plant and prevent absorption of water and nutrients. Anchoring nanomaterials in larger composites of micrometer size presents a promising alternative that would retain their super-adsorbent properties while avoiding toxicity due to nanometric size.Elderly people are more severely affected by COVID-19. Nevertheless scarce information about specific prognostic scores for this population is available. The main objective was to compare the accuracy of recently developed COVID-19 prognostic scores to that of CURB-65, Charlson and PROFUND indices in a cohort of 272 elderly patients from four nursing homes, affected by COVID-19. Accuracy was measured by calibration (calibration curves and Hosmer-Lemeshov (H-L) test), and discriminative power (area under the receiver operation curve (AUC-ROC). Negative and positive predictive values (NPV and PPV) were also obtained. Overall mortality rate was 22.4 %. Only ACP and Shi et al. out of 10 specific COVID-19 indices could be assessed. All indices but CURB-65 showed a good calibration by H-L test, whilst PROFUND, ACP and CURB-65 showed best results in calibration curves. Only CURB-65 (AUC-ROC = 0.81 [0.75-0.87])) and PROFUND (AUC-ROC = 0.67 [0.6-0.75])) showed good discrimination power. ARRY-438162 The highest NPV was obtained by CURB-65 (95 % [90-98%]), PROFUND (93 % [77-98%]), and their combination (100 % [82-100%]); whereas CURB-65 (74 % [51-88%]), and its combination with PROFUND (80 % [50-94%]) showed highest PPV. PROFUND and CURB-65 indices showed the highest accuracy in predicting death-risk of elderly patients affected by COVID-19, whereas Charlson and recent developed COVID-19 specific tools lacked it, or were not available to assess. A comprehensive clinical stratification on two-level basis (basal death risk due to chronic conditions by PROFUND index, plus current death risk due to COVID-19 by CURB-65), could be an appropriate approach.
Parents play an important role in protecting their children from sexual abuse. Mothers, in particular, play key roles in the sexual socialization of their children and in educating their children about child sexual abuse (CSA).
The purpose of this study was to determine whether preschool girls in Gorgan (a city in northern Iran) could learn personal safety skills when taught by their mothers.
Fifty-six participants (mother-daughter pairs) were recruited from patients visiting health centers. Mean age of girls was 6.34 years.
Girls were pretested using Persian versions of the Personal Safety Questionnaire and ‘What If’ Situations Test, randomly assigned to either a mother-taught program or wait-list control, and post-tested. Mothers assigned to the education group participated in a two-hour workshop on preventing CSA and were given the Body Safety Training workbook to teach their daughters. Following the one-week training by their mothers, children in both groups were post-tested and follow-up tested one month later.
Children taught by their mothers demonstrated significant increases in knowledge about sexual abuse and higher levels of personal safety skills compared to controls, and these gains were maintained at the one-month follow-up.
Results suggest that mothers can effectively teach their young daughters personal safety skills. Difficulties female children have in recognizing appropriate-touch requests are discussed and compared to results in other developing countries. Advantages of home-based instruction for young children are described and suggestions for increasing parent participation are offered.
