This study aimed to explore the legal and social consequences of substance use in Bangladesh. We conducted a nationwide descriptive cross-sectional study among relapse cases of substance use from January to December 2018. We visited 138 drug rehabilitation centers countrywide and were able to recruit 939 relapse cases, from where 28 cases were excluded due to incomplete data. Finally, data from 911 cases were analyzed. The majority (89.3%) of the study participants were 19-45 years old. Most commonly used drugs were amphetamine (76.1%), cannabis (75.0%), alcohol (54.3%), cough sirup (54.2%), heroin (47.0%) and sleeping pills (21.6%). Almost half (49.5%) of the substance users were arrested for drug use and among arrested cases, 52.1% were sent to jail. About 75% of the substance users experienced a lack of family interaction, 70% experienced destroyed family relationships, and 71.4% faced social stigma. Our study also found 60% of the participants were bullied, 50% were deprived or unwilling to have social interactions. Moreover, 13.8% of the participants left home, while 8% got divorced. Our data represented the significant impact of substance use on the legal aspect and social life of individuals. However, with a multi-dimensional treatment, rehabilitation, and social intervention approach, it is not impossible to overcome. Therefore, we believe it is imperative to focus on social awareness and to create a robust platform for health promotion and improve quality of life.Social workers have a prominent role in responding to cancer patients’ mental health needs. Given the risk of mental health distress in cancer patients, and given that social workers are responsible for responding to these needs, the purpose of this study was to explore how social workers describe their role in responding to mental health distress and suicidality in people with cancer. The Grounded Theory method of data collection and analysis was used. Eighteen social workers were recruited and interviewed. Social workers saw themselves and acted as an interprofessional hub for their patients. This approach was based on the values of holistic care, multiple treatment modalities, interpersonal consultation, and continuity of care. From this standpoint, social workers offered their patients (and at times, their families) comprehensive services providing emotional, behavioral and practical support within the hospital setting, but also outside of it in the patient’s communities. A. Meyer) is a famous Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is widely used to treat cardiovascular disease. Monascus ruber (M. ruber) is a fungus used in food and medicine fermentation, and lovastatin, its metabolite, is used extensively in the treatment of dyslipidemia. In this study, ginseng has been fermented by M. ruber, and the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize fermentation parameters to obtain optimal fermentation system, with further exploring to lipid-lowering activity of P. ginseng C. A. Meyer-M. ruber fermentation products (PM). The concentration of ginseng, temperature, and rotating speed were set as variables and the lovastatin yield was optimized by a Box-Behnken design (BBD) analyzed by RSM. The binding capacity of PM for sodium taurocholate and sodium cholate was assayed by UV spectrophotometry. The highest content of lovastatin production (85.53 μg g-1) was obtained at a ginseng concentration of 1.96%, temperature of 30.11 °C, and a rotating speed of 160.47 rpm. PM exhibited bile acid binding capacity, which was stronger than unfermented ginseng. The RSM can be used to optimize the fermentation system to obtain the best fermentation process. In addition, the fermentation of ginseng by M. ruber can enhance the lipid-lowering effect.
