    This study presents Chinook salmon-specific TEFs for bulk and amino acid SIA. It supports the application of future research applying SIA to the study of Chinook salmon and validates previous research on species-specific TEFs.

    Evidence suggests that alcohol reduction interventions decrease intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration, although this remains untested in low- and middle-income countries and among men with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study evaluates the effectiveness of alcohol reduction counseling interventions on IPV perpetration among men on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and tests whether alcohol use explains the intervention effects.

    Secondary analysis of data from a three-arm randomized controlled trial among ART patients with hazardous alcohol use. Participants were recruited from March 2016 to May 2017.

Participants received a two-session brief intervention (BI), a six-session combined intervention (CoI) or the standard of care (SOC), comprising alcohol treatment referrals. Alcohol reduction counseling interventions were guided by cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational enhancement therapy delivered by psychosocial counselors over 3month reduce intimate partner violence perpetration immediately post-intervention, but reductions were not sustained at 6 and 12 months and were not explained by alcohol reduction.Photoactive two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) have become promising heterogenous photocatalysts in visible-light-driven organic transformations. Herein, a visible-light-driven selective aerobic oxidation of various small organic molecules by using 2D-COFs as the photocatalyst was developed. In this protocol, due to the remarkable photocatalytic capability of hydrazone-based 2D-COF-1 on molecular oxygen activation, a wide range of amides, quinolones, heterocyclic compounds, and sulfoxides were obtained with high efficiency and excellent functional group tolerance under very mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, benefiting from the inherent advantage of heterogenous photocatalysis, prominent sustainability and easy photocatalyst recyclability, a drug molecule (modafinil) and an oxidized mustard gas simulant (2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide) were selectively and easily obtained in scale-up reactions. Mechanistic investigations were conducted using radical quenching experiments and in situ ESR spectroscopy, all corroborating the proposed role of 2D-COF-1 in photocatalytic cycle.

    Major declines in HIV and hepatitis C and B virus (HCV/HBV) incidence among people who inject drugs (PWID) have been attributed to early implementation of harm-reduction programs (HRP) in the Netherlands, but alternative factors such as selective mortality and demographic and drug market shifts over time probably contributed to observed incidence declines. We quantified and tested the effect of HRP participation on risk of these infections among PWID in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

    We emulated the design of a hypothetical, ideal randomized trial using observational data from the Amsterdam Cohort Studies (1985-2014).

    We included PWID who ever used opioids, had a recent history of injecting drug use (IDU) and tested negative for HIV, HCV or HBV. Of 983 participants, 640, 137 and 308 were included for the HIV, HCV and HBV analyses and 59, 45 and 49 seroconversions were observed, respectively.

    Intervention arms were complete HRP participation [≥60mg/day methadone and 100% needle and syringe program (NSP) coverage, or any methadone dose if no recent injection drug use] versus no HRP and partial HRP participation combined (<60 methadone mg/day and/or <100% NSP coverage).

    Complete participation in harm reduction programs appears to have led to substantial decreases in HIV and hepatitis C and B virus acquisition risk among people who inject drugs in the Netherlands.

    Separately for each infection, we estimated the hazard ratios (HR) comparing HRP arms using marginal structural models.

    Compared with no/partial HRP participation, complete HRP participation led to lower risk of HIV [HR=0.54, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.27-1.08], HCV (HR=0.16, 95% CI=0.06-0.40) and HBV (HR=0.28, 95% CI=0.13-0.61) acquisition.

Meniscus tissue engineering aims to replace injured meniscus with lab-grown fibrocartilage. Dynamic culture systems may be necessary to generate fibrocartilage of sufficient mechanical properties for implantation; however, the optimal static preculture conditions before initiation of dynamic culture are unknown. This study thus investigated the time course of fibrocartilage formation by human meniscus fibrochondrocytes on a three-dimensional biomaterial scaffold under various static conditions. Human meniscus fibrochondrocytes from partial meniscectomy were expanded to passage 1 (P1) or P2 (3.0 ± 0.4 and 6.5 ± 0.6 population doublings), seeded onto type I collagen scaffolds, and grown in hypoxia (HYP, 3% O2 ) or normoxia (NRX, 20% O2 ) for 3, 6, and 9 weeks. Mechanical properties were not different between P1 and P2 cell-based constructs. Mechanical properties were lower in HYP, increased continually in NRX only, and were positively correlated with glycosaminoglycan content and accumulation of hyaline cartilage-like matrix components. The most mechanically competent tissues (NRX/9 weeks) reached 1/5 of the native meniscus instantaneous compression modulus but had an increasingly hypertrophic matrix-forming phenotype. read more HYP consistently suppressed the hypertrophic phenotype. The results provide baselines of engineered meniscus fibrocartilage properties under static conditions, which can be used to select a preculture strategy for dynamic culture depending on the desired combination of mechanical properties, hyaline cartilage-like matrix abundance, and hypertrophic phenotype.
