HCV infection is targeted by the WHO’s Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis to be reduced notably by 2030. However, renovated epidemiological data is needed to line up with such goals. Herein, we provide an updated review of incidence, prevalence, genotypes (GTs), and risk factors (RFs) of HCV infection in Mexico to build elimination strategies.
HCV incidence was charted using the cumulative new cases/year at week 52. Prevalence, GTs, and RFs data from low-risk (LR-G) and high-risk (HR-Gs) groups were searched in PubMed/MEDLINE/Medigraphic/Scielo databases from January 2008 to December 2019 as per PRISMA guidelines. Weighted mean prevalence (WMP) was estimated; GTs and RFs were registered.
In this study, 25,247 new cases were reported. Ten states accumulated 76.32% of HCV incidence that peaked in men at 50-59 years and women at 60-64 years. Thirty-four studies revealed a WMP between 0.774%-2.5% in LR-Gs and 11.8%-39.6% in HR-Gs that included mainly prison inmates, drug users, and dialyzed paand antiviral treatment available to all eligible HCV-infected patients.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major cardiovascular risk factor for increased risk of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (MI). DM is also associated with a poorer clinical outcome in MI.
The nationwide German inpatient population treated between 2005 and 2016 was used for statistical analyses. Hospitalized MI patients were stratified by the presence of DM and investigated for the impact of DM on in-hospital events.
In total, 3,307,703 hospitalizations for acute MI (37.6% female patients, 56.8% aged ≥ 70 years) treated in Germany during 2005-2016 were included in this analysis. Of these patients, 410,737 (12.4%) died while in hospital. Overall, 1,007,326 (30.5%) MI cases were coded for DM. While the rate of MI patients with DM increased slightly over time, from 29.8% in 2005 to 30.7% in 2016 (β = 7.04, 95% CI 4.13-9.94; P < 0.001), their in-hospital mortality decreased from 15.2% to 11.5% (β = -0.36, 95% CI -0.38 to -0.34; P < 0.001). Rates of in-hospital death (13.2% vs 12.1%; P < 0.001) and recurrent MI (0.8% vs 0.6%; P < 0.001) were higher in MI patients with vs without DM. Also, in MI patients with DM, significantly lower use of coronary artery angiography (51.5% vs 56.8%; P < 0.001) and interventional revascularization (37.6% vs 43.9%; P < 0.001) was noted.

The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis of how Hispanic adults who stutter experience stigma. To do so, seven Hispanic/Latino adults who stutter were interviewed using ethnographic interviewing techniques. A thematic analysis of participants’ narrative responses gave rise to four major themes Family, Stigma in Society, Stuttering Experiences in Cultural and Linguistic Contexts, and Stigma’s Impact on Identity. Findings indicate that Hispanic adults who stutter experience stigma in unique ways that affect their language use, cultural participation, and identity. An understanding of these cultural and linguistic factors will allow clinicians to develop a more nuanced and effective approach when treating Hispanic adults who stutter.
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD®), an intensive 4-week program of voice therapy, is regarded as the most well-researched, efficacious treatment for hypokinetic dysarthria in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Although numerous studies have published acoustic and perceptual findings, there is comparatively little information about the impact of LSVT LOUD® on functional communication outcomes.
This prospective, longitudinal study investigated the impact of treatment on daily communication in 25 individuals with PD. Three validated communication measures (the Voice Handicap Index, the Communicative Effectiveness Scale, and the Communicative Participation Item Bank) were given before and after treatment and again 4-8 weeks and 3-6 months following treatment. Communication partners were also asked to rate communication effectiveness at all four timepoints.
Significant improvements were found for all three self-reported scales which remained above baseline across all post-treatment timepoints.
