Surgical experience is of paramount importance to reach therapeutic success and minimize operative complications. In the field of pituitary surgery, this led to the concept of Pituitary Center of Excellence (PTCOE) defined as a center where an interdisciplinary team works in collaboration and where surgeons can be trained appropriately to reach and keep excellence in daily practice. To review the literature to define the optimal referral population size to establish a PTCOE to optimize both training and specific field research. A review of the literature was performed about epidemiology. The time needed to observe 200 cases of PAs in a single PTCOE and to reach the minimal surgical experience threshold (MSET) was calculated for different referral population groups. The time needed to reach MSET decreased as population size increased. We defined a population as the optimal one to be served by a single PTCOE with a single dedicated neurosurgeon. PTCOEs should be established after an analysis of the referral population, number of cases suitable for surgical treatment and number of dedicated neurosurgeons.The aim of this study was to evaluate a multicomponent complex (MC) between rifampicin (RIF), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and selected amino acids to enhance the solubility and antibiofilm activity of RIF. After performing phase-solubility studies that demonstrated a considerable increase in the solubility of RIF for the MC, the corresponding solid system was prepared by a freeze-drying method. Characterization of the MC was performed by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Structural analyses evidenced molecular interactions between the components, resulting in a MC with amorphous solid features. Structural studies involving both experimental (i.e., 1H NMR) and theoretical (i.e., molecular modeling) methodologies demonstrated the inclusion of the RIF piperazine ring in the β-CD cavity. The bioactivity of the MC measured against biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus showed a significant reduction in the metabolic activity of the bacterium. Overall, the studied MC exhibited promising properties for the development of pharmaceutical formulations to treat bacterial infections.The development of devices that can fix the tidal volume in high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) has allowed for a significant improvement in the management of HFOV. At our institution, this had led to the earlier use of HFOV and promoted a change in the treatment strategy involving the use of higher frequencies (above 15 Hz) and lower high-frequency tidal volumes (VThf). The purpose of this observational study was to assess how survival without bronchopulmonary dysplasia grades 2 and 3 (SF-BPD) is influenced by these modifications in the respiratory strategy applied to preterm infants (gestational age less then 32 weeks at birth) who required mechanical ventilation (MV) in the first 3 days of life. We compared a baseline period (2012-2013) against a period in which this strategy had been fully implemented (2016-2017). IACS-010759 chemical structure A total of 182 patients were exposed to MV in the first 3 days of life being a higher proportion on HFOV at day 3 in the second period 79.5% (n 35) in 2016-2017 vs 55.4% (n 31) in 2012-2013. The original article has been corrected.Although both estrogen deficiency and diabetes contribute to periodontal tissue deterioration, the combined effects of these conditions on periodontium is unknown. Thus, we analyzed the combined effects of ovariectomy followed by streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes on periodontal tissues of rats. Twenty adult rats were ovariectomized (OVX) or SHAM-operated (SHAM). After 3 weeks, the rats received an intraperitoneal injection of STZ (60 mg/kg/body weight) to induce diabetes or vehicle (blank) solution. The groups were assigned as follows (n = 5) SHAM-vehicle (SHAM), OVX-vehicle (OVX), SHAM + STZ (SHAM-Di), and OVX + STZ (OVX-Di). Seven weeks post-diabetes induction, the rats were euthanized. Blood samples were collected for glucose measurements and maxillae were processed for paraffin embedding. Sections stained with hematoxylin/eosin, Masson’s trichrome, and picrosirius-red were used for alveolar bone loss and collagen fiber analysis in the lamina propria. Immunohistochemistry was performed for runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), and tryptase detection. Alveolar bone loss and fewer collagen fibers were observed in the OVX-Di group, collagen fibers with irregular organization, and MMP-9 immunoreactivity were more evident in diabetic groups, and MMP-9-positive osteoclasts on alveolar bone surface were noticed in all groups. The OVX-Di group showed lower Runx2 immunoreactivity (osteoblast formation marker), and more tryptase-positive cells (mast cell marker) in the alveolar bone marrow. Our results indicate that estrogen depletion, followed by STZ-induced diabetes, promotes periodontal tissue deterioration that is more evident than both interventions applied alone. Furthermore, our results points to a possible participation of bone-derived mast cells in this process.
