PURPOSE To understand nursing perceptions of hospital requirements for routine resiting of short peripheral catheters (SPCs). METHODS This exploratory research project at the authors’ medium-sized regional referral and trauma center utilized an online survey to assess the perceived efficacy and patient disruption related to SPC resiting among acute care nurses. RESULTS Out of 203 eligible nurses, 81 participated. The survey results support the perception that SPC insertions and resiting can be time-consuming and disruptive to the flow of care. The strongest correlation occurred between patients who had requested no SPC resiting and the reported disruption from SPC resiting. CONCLUSION Based on the survey results, a formal recommendation was made within the hospital system to amend the existing policy and remove the requirement for SPC resiting after 96 hours in favor of the nurses’ best clinical judgment. Some nurses continue to routinely dilute I.V. push medications, a practice associated with a high risk of errors. This article reviews correct practices for administering I.V. push medications.Oncology nurses are at increased risk for compassion fatigue compared with those in other specialties. This article describes a quality improvement project to create self-compassion tool kits by incorporating the input and opinions of the frontline staff. The FDA has approved brexanolone specifically for treatment of adults with postpartum depression (PPD). Administered I.V., it can relieve severe signs and symptoms of PPD within days rather than weeks. This article discusses the benefits and risks of brexanolone as a treatment for PPD, including nursing considerations and patient teaching.Due to factors related to increasing globalization, geopolitical conflicts, and climate change, tropical nursing is increasingly important. This article offers an overview of the Diploma in Tropical Nursing program and explores the challenges facing nurses who serve patients in tropical settings with limited resources. This article reviews seven drugs recently approved by the FDA, including indications, precautions, adverse reactions, and nursing considerations.Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is common in both acute care and primary care settings. It can range from self-limited bleeding to life-threatening hemorrhagic emergencies. This article discusses the assessment and management of adults with acute UGIB, including pharmacologic and nursing interventions.CONTEXT Social and behavioral sciences, a cross-disciplinary field that examines the interaction among behavioral, biological, environmental, and social factors, has contributed immensely to some public health achievements over the last century. Through collaboration with community organizations and partners, social and behavioral scientists have conducted numerous program interventions involving community engagement and advocacy efforts at the local, state, federal, and international levels. CONTRIBUTIONS OF SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES This article traces select historical underpinnings of the applications of social and behavioral sciences theories and evidence to public health and highlights 4 areas in which health education specialists have distinctly contributed to public health achievements by building on theory and evidence. Applied social and behavioral sciences have formed the basis of various health education interventions. These 4 areas include the following (1) Theory, Model Development, and the Professionalization of Health Education; (2) Participation and Community Engagement; (3) Health Communication; and (4) Advocacy and Policy. DISCUSSION We present contemporary challenges and recommendations for strengthening the theory, research, and practice of health education within the context of social and behavioral sciences in addressing emerging public health issues.OBJECTIVE To assess the association between evidence-based decision making, including implementation of evidence-based interventions (EBIs), with accreditation of state health departments through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). DESIGN This was a cross-sectional, electronic survey of state health department practitioners. We utilized a survey instrument focused on evidence-based public health, de-implementation, and sustainability of public health programs. Survey questions were organized into 6 domains (1) demographic information; (2) individual-level skills; (3) decision making on programs ending; (4) decision making on programs continuing; (5) organization/agency capacity; and (6) external influences. PARTICIPANTS The targeted practitioners were randomly selected from the 3000-person membership of National Association of Chronic Disease Directors and program manager lists from key Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-supported programs in cancer and cancer risk factors. The final target opriate termination of programs in their work unit (P = .05). CONCLUSIONS The importance of accreditation relates to both internally focused functions and externally focused activities, especially regarding policy-related impact.BACKGROUND County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) makes data on health determinants and outcomes available at the county level, but health data at subcounty levels are needed. selleckchem Three pilot projects in California, Missouri, and New York explored multiple approaches for defining measures and producing data at subcounty geographic and demographic levels based on the CHR&R model. This article summarizes the collective technical and implementation considerations from the projects, challenges inherent in analyzing subcounty health data, and lessons learned to inform future subcounty health data projects. METHODS The research teams used 12 data sources to produce 40 subcounty measures that replicate or approximate county-level measures from the CHR&R model. Using varying technical methods, the pilot projects followed similar stages (1) conceptual development of data sources and measures; (2) analysis and presentation of small-area and subpopulation measures for public health, health care, and lay audiences; and (3) positioning the subcounty data initiatives for growth and sustainability.
