    This study evaluates the total antioxidant status (TAS) in plasma of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Earlier studies of their relationship showed inconsistent findings.

    We compared TAS between 90 COPD patients and 30 age- and sex-matched controls (mean age 67 ± 7.9, 87 males and 33 females) according to airway obstruction severity, gender, smoking status (current/ former/ non-smoker), smoking-dose, the number of exacerbations in the previous year, nutritional status and hypercapnia.

    There were no differences in pack-years between COPD and controls, neither in COPD groups. The median time from the last exacerbation was 5 months (interquartile range 3-8.3). TAS was significant higher in COPD than controls (1.68 [1.55-1.80] versus 1.59 [1.54-1.68], respectively; P = 0.03). TAS was significantly higher in COPD men than women (1.7 [1.6-1.8] versus 1.57 [1.5-1.7], respectively; P = 0.001). In COPD groups, there were no significant differences between the severity of airway obstru airway obstruction severity. Our results suggest that it could be appropriate to include the time from the last exacerbation in the oxidant-antioxidant balance analysis of COPD patients.

    Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is often not identified in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) until advanced stages of disease, despite the availability of genetic testing. While clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations on patients who should be tested, more refined algorithms are needed to identify COPD patients who are likely candidates for AATD testing and to prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment.     The objectives of this study were two-fold 1) to investigate differences in activity duration and amplitude of the submental muscles during swallowing measured with surface electromyography (sEMG) in older patients with sarcopenic dysphagia compared to those without dysphagia and 2) to examine the diagnostic accuracy of submental sEMG signals for sarcopenic dysphagia.

    Patients (n = 60) aged ≥65 years participated in this cross-sectional study. The submental muscle activity duration parameters were the duration from the onset of swallowing to the maximum amplitude (duration A), duration from the maximum amplitude to the end of the swallowing activity (duration B), and total duration. The amplitude parameters were mean and maximum amplitude. Maximum lingual pressures were also measured for comparison with sEMG parameters.

    Duration A was not significantly different between the groups (p = 0.15), but duration B (p < 0.001) and total duration (p < 0.001) were significantly different between the non-dysing pathophysiology of sarcopenic dysphagia and in diagnosing sarcopenic dysphagia.

    The aim of this study was to analyze the severity of changes in cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, overweight and obesity, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, burdened family history) and to assess the risk of a cardiovascular incident according to the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) algorithm in the same group of patients over a five-year interval.

    The research method was analysis of medical records of patients from the area of West Pomeranian Province, Poland, included in the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program of the National Health Fund five years after the first examination (2012/2013 vs 2017/2018). We collected data on changes in the levels of selected cardiovascular risk factors over five years and calculated the SCORE values.

    Vitamin D (25[OH]D) status and bone turnover markers (BTMs) are considered important determinants of bone quality, which is associated with the risk of hip fractures, including both femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures, in older adults; however, the exact relationship of 25(OH)D and BTMs with the type and severity of hip fractures remains unclear and the present study aimed to identify any specific associations.

    According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 441 older female patients with hip fractures from 2015 to 2020 and 215 women without hip fractures were included in this cross-sectional study. According to Garden and AO/OTA classifications for femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures, patients were divided into less severe (Garden I and Garden II; 31A1) and more severe (Garden III and Garden IV; 31A2 and 31A3) fracture groups. Levels of the serum osteoblast indicator, N-terminal/mid region (N-MID); the osteoclast indicator, beta-carboxy terminal telopeptide (β-CTX); and 25(OH)D were analyzed.
