    Obturator hernia is a rare pelvic hernia associated with a high morbidity and mortality. It most commonly occurs in elderly, multiparous females with symptoms and signs of small bowel obstruction. We present an Australian hospital network experience on emergency presentations of obturator hernias highlighting differences between clinical profile and surgical management.

    A retrospective review of adult patients diagnosed with acute obturator hernia during a 10 year period (2010-2020) was conducted across 10 major Sydney hospitals in New South Wales, Australia.

    Obturator hernia was diagnosed in 18 patients (mean 82.7 years, range 60-96 years old), all confirmed on pre-operative computed tomography imaging. The most common presentations were elderly women demonstrating clinical features of a small bowel obstruction. The mean onset of symptoms from home to hospital admission was 49.4h. Non-survivors had a significantly elevated urea level (15.6 vs. 7.8 mmol/L, p= 0.036) at presentation and a longer delay from onset of presenting symptoms to diagnosis (84.0 vs. 36.2 h, p= 0.028). Eleven patients underwent urgent laparotomy and six laparoscopic repairs. The mean operative time was 101.0min. The average hospital length of stay was 16.2 days with a mortality rate of 27.8%.

Here, a comparison of the new GLP-1/GIP dual receptor agonist DA5-CH and NLY01, a 40 kDa pegylated form of exendin-4, on motor impairments and reducing inflammation in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) PD mouse model is provided. The drug groups received either DA5-CH or NLY01 (25 nmol/kg) i.p. after daily MPTP intraperitoneal injection. Both drugs showed improvements in motor activity, open field experiments, rotarod tests, and gait analysis, but DA5-CH was more potent. Tyrosine hydroxylase expression in dopaminergic neurons was much reduced by MPTP and improved by DA5-CH, while NLY01 showed weak effects. When analyzing levels of α-synuclein (α-Syn), DA5-CH reduced levels effectively while NLY01 had no effect.     Dysphagia is a highly prevalent condition and affects a wide range of cohorts. A common compensatory strategy to manage dysphagia is diet modification. However, this technique is often associated with poor patient quality of life and adverse long-term effects. Carbonated liquids have shown promise as an alternative compensatory strategy for the management of dysphagia.

    A total of 35 healthy young adults were recruited for this prospective, quantitative cohort study. Yet to date, the imaging literature in the language disorder field has continued to pursue heterogeneous and relatively small clinical cross-sectional samples, with emphasis on cortical structures and volumetric analyses of subcortical brain structures. In our current work, we aimed to go beyond this state of knowledge to focus on the microstructural features of subcortical brain structures (specifically the caudate nucleus) in a large cohort of neonates and study its association with emerging language skills at 24 months. Variations in neonatal brain microstructure could be interpreted as a proxy for in utero brain development. As language development is highly dependent on cognitive function and home literacy environment, we also examined their effect on the caudate-language function relationship utilizing a conditional process model.
