    The challenges and perspectives in the synthesis of carbon dots from biomass wastes are also briefly outlined.Nanotechnology is a very attractive tool for tailoring the surface of an orthopedic implant to optimize its interaction with the biological environment. Nanostructured interfaces are promising, especially for orthopedic applications. They can not only improve osseointegration between the implant and the living bone but also may be used as drug delivery platforms. The nanoporous structure can be used as a drug carrier to the surrounding tissue, with the intention to accelerate tissue-implant integration as well as to reduce and treat bacterial infections occurring after implantation. Titanium oxide nanotubes are promising for such applications; however, their brittle nature could be a significantly limiting factor. In this work, we modified the topography of commercially used titanium foil by the anodization process and hydrothermal treatment. As a result, we obtained a crystalline nanoporous u-shaped structure (US) of anodized titanium oxide with improved resistance to scratch compared to TiO2 nanotubes. The US titanium substrate was successfully modified with hydroxyapatite coating and investigated for bioactivity. Results showed high bioactivity in simulated body fluid (SBF) after two weeks of incubation.Identification of molecules able to promote neuroprotective mechanisms can represent a promising therapeutic approach to neurodegenerative disorders including Huntington’s disease. The aim of this study is to provide a possible effective delivery system for curcumin with the expectation that, after having released the drug at the specific site, the biopolymer can degrade to nontoxic fragments before renal excretion, since all the starting materials are provided by natural resource. Our findings demonstrate that curcumin-encapsulated nanoparticles enter the cells and reduce their susceptibility to apoptosis in an in vitro model of Huntington’s disease.The aim was to examine how proximity to facilities, as a component of community determinants, is associated with the health-related habits of functionally independent community-dwelling older adults. This was a cross-sectional study. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews. Participants were >65 years old, living in 15 municipalities of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain). Proximity to park-green spaces, cultural-sport centers, market-food stores, retirement associations, religious centers, primary care centers and hospitals was explored. Sociodemographic variables and health-related habits (diet, physical activity and self-perceived social life) were collected. Logistic regression models were performed. The sample comprised of 634 individuals (55% women; mean age 74.8, SD 6.7 years). Older age (odds ratio-OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.97) was associated with lower physical activity, while being male (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.08-2.68) and proximity to park-green spaces (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.03-2.61) were related to more physical activity. Individuals with good self-perceived health (OR 3.50, 95% CI 1.82-6.74) and religious centers within walking distance (OR 2.66, 95% CI 1.40-5.04) had higher odds of a satisfactory social life. Encouraging the creation of park-green spaces and leisure centers near residential areas can assist in promoting physical activity and improving the social life of older adults.Transplantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) has been proposed as an alternative novel therapy to replace damaged neural circuitry after ischemic stroke onset. Nonetheless, albeit the potential of these cells for stroke therapy, many critical challenges are yet to be overcome to reach clinical applications. The major limitation of the NSC-based therapy is its inability to retain most of the donor stem cells after grafting into an ischemic brain area which is lacking of essential oxygen and nutrients for the survival of transplanted cells. Low cell survival rate limits the capacity of NSCs to repair the injured area and this poses a much more difficult challenge to the NSC-based therapy for ischemic stroke. In order to enhance the survival of transplanted cells, several stem cell culture preconditioning strategies have been employed. Thus, we suggest for more in-depth clinical investigations of this cell-based therapy to develop into more conscientious and judicious evidence-based therapy for clinical application in the future.We report the case of a 71-year-old man affected by testicular large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), treated with right orchiectomy and first-line chemotherapy (R-CHOP, 8 cycles). A complete remission was obtained after therapy. Twenty-two months after the primary diagnosis the patient suddenly presented dyspnoea and superior vena cava syndrome; thus, he underwent a CT scan that revealed a large mass in the right atrium, expanding to the superior vena cava. A differential diagnosis between a neoplastic mass and a clot was proposed. The subsequent MR did not clarify the nature of the mass; therefore, the patient underwent an 18F-FDG PET/CT scan (PET/CT), after a specific preparation to reduce fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) myocardial uptake. PET/CT revealed an intense FDG uptake involving the whole mass (SUVmax 9.4), suggestive for neoplasm and confirmed by the subsequent endocardiac biopsy. The patient was treated with 8 cycles of R-COMP, obtaining a complete remission, as indicated by the PET/CT performed after the seventh cycle of therapy.
