For the purpose of our study, we collected relevant information from the database of the Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) of icddr,b and performed analysis to understand the trends and identify the determinants of EBF and identify the determinants of EBF among adolescent mothers living in two areas between 2007 and 2015. In total, 2947 children born to adolescent mothers were included in our final analysis. We used the Kaplan-Meier and the Cox-proportional hazards models to determine the differences in EBF practices in the two areas. We noted a lower trends of EBF in the ISA compared to the GSA in bivariate analysis. However, after adjusting for confounding variables, EBF status was 15% lower in the GSA than the ISA (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.72-0.99). The father’s education was significantly different among the two populations. In both study areas, the coverage of EBF among adolescent mothers was lower than the national average (42% vs. 65%). Circulating methylated RPRML DNA may serve as a biomarker for the non-invasive detection of gastric cancer.A long-term monitoring was conducted at 40 sites in four different habitats in north-western Switzerland to observe changes in populations of native ladybirds, following the invasion of the Asian harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis. From 2006 to 2017, the same trees and meadows were sampled at least seven times per year using standard protocols. On 15 broadleaved hedges, H. axyridis quickly became the dominant species, representing 60 to 80% of adult ladybirds collected. It was second in abundance at five pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands and was a minor component of the ladybird complex at five spruce (Picea abies) stands and in 15 meadows. This survey revealed the severe decline of Adalia bipunctata, which was the most abundant native ladybird on broadleaved trees in 2006-2009 and has almost disappeared since 2010. So far, other native ladybirds do not seem to decline significantly, including species occupying the same ecological niches as H. axyridis. The total number of aphidophagous ladybirds did not decline either, suggesting that the biological control function of ladybirds on aphids living in these habitats has not been affected by the arrival of H. axyridis. Recommendations are given to further assess the impact of H. axyridis on native ladybirds and aphids.This study was designed to determine the optimal intensity for verification phase testing (VP) in healthy, young adults. Thirty one young, active participants (16 females) completed a cycle ergometer graded exercise test (GXT) VO2max test and 4 VP tests at 80, 90, 100, and 105% of the maximum wattage achieved during the GXT. GXT and VP VO2max values showed a significant test x sex interaction (p = 0.02). The males elicited significantly higher VO2max values during the GXT, 80%, and 90% when compared to the 105%, (105 vs. GXT p = 0.05; 105% vs. 80% p 0.90) and low variation (CVs less then 3%) for the 90% VP. Our findings show that a submaximal verification phase intensity is ideal for young healthy males to elicit the highest VO2max during cycle ergometer testing. For females, a range of intensities (80-105%) produce similar VO2max values. However, the 80% VP yields an unnecessarily high time to exhaustion.Biomarker-driven targeted therapies are lacking for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), which is common and lethal. Efforts to develop such therapies are hindered by a genomic landscape dominated by the loss of tumor suppressor function, including NOTCH1 that is frequently mutated in HNSCC. Clearer understanding of NOTCH1 signaling in HNSCCs is crucial to clinically targeting this pathway. Structural characterization of NOTCH1 mutations in HNSCC demonstrates that most are predicted to cause loss of function, in agreement with NOTCH1’s role as a tumor suppressor in this cancer. Experimental manipulation of NOTCH1 signaling in HNSCC cell lines harboring either mutant or wild-type NOTCH1 further supports a tumor suppressor function. Additionally, the loss of NOTCH1 signaling can drive HNSCC tumorigenesis and clinical aggressiveness. Our recent data suggest that NOTCH1 controls genes involved in early differentiation that could have different phenotypic consequences depending on the cancer’s genetic background, including acquisition of pseudo-stem cell-like properties.
