The reactivity of “furan-ynes” in combination with pyridine and quinoline N-oxides in the presence of a Au(I) catalyst, has been studied, enabling the synthesis of three different heterocyclic scaffolds. Selective access to two out of the three possible products, a dihydropyridinone and a furan enone, has been achieved through the fine-tuning of the reaction conditions. The reactions proceed smoothly at room temperature and open-air, and were further extended to a broad substrate scope, thus affording functionalized dihydropyridinones and pyranones. The recent coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected people worldwide. A growing body of literature suggests the neurological complications and manifestations in response to COVID-19 infection. Herein, we explored the inflammatory and immune responses in the post-mortem cerebral cortex of patients with severe COVID-19. The participants comprised three patients diagnosed with severe COVID-19 from March 26, 2020, to April 17, 2020, and three control patients. Our findings demonstrated a surge in the number of reactive astrocytes and activated microglia, as well as low levels of glutathione along with the upregulation of inflammation- and immune-related genes IL1B, IL6, IFITM, MX1, and OAS2 in the COVID-19 group. Overall, the data imply that oxidative stress may invoke a glial-mediated neuroinflammation, which ultimately leads to neuronal cell death in the cerebral cortex of COVID-19 patients.Considering that the periodic photonic nanostructures are commonly realized by expensive nanofabrication processes and the tunability of structure parameters is limited and complicated, we demonstrate a solution-processed upside-down molding method to fabricate photonic resonators on perovskites with a pattern geometry controllable to a certain extent. This upside-down approach not only reveals the effect of capillary force during the imprinting but also can control the waveguide layer thickness due to the inversion of the perovskite membranes.Walnut oil is vulnerable to oxidation due to its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and adulteration due to its high price. This study investigated 12 typical walnut oils from six main walnut-producing areas in China, using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Rancimat test, gas chromatography (GC), elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) and GC-IRMS combined with oxidation kinetic analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). The melting and crystallization profiles using DSC indicated that walnut oils with a relatively high crystal onset temperature tended to be more stable against oxidation. Oleic acid was found to be the most characteristic fatty acid in walnut oil, with a content ranging from 13.84 to 35.08%. Two walnut oils with the highest oleic acid contents of 35.08 and 32.78% had the highest activation energies in nonisothermal DSC. Their predicted shelf lives based on the Rancimat test were 3.5-4.0 times longer than that of the oil with the highest α-linolenic acid at 4 °C and 3.1-3.5 times longer at 25 °C. The δ13C values of walnut oils were determined by EA-IRMS, and the δ13C values of fatty acids were determined by GC-IRMS. Fatty acid stable carbon isotope ratios combined with PCA were successfully applied to intuitively discriminate different walnut oils. The results suggested that fatty acid δ13C values determined by IRMS combined with chemometrics and lipid compositions are promising as a powerful means of vegetable oil authentication and discrimination.Anisotropic superhydrophobic surfaces that have many superior properties, such as directional self-cleaning, droplet transport, heat transfer, and so on, are widely used in various fields. Different from symmetric surfaces, a water droplet often shows directional spreading, moving, and bouncing on asymmetric surfaces. To investigate the mechanisms and achieve controllability of droplet motions on asymmetric surfaces, a series of surfaces with inclined micro-conical arrays are fabricated by integrating the methods of soft lithography, hot-pressing, and crystal growth. We found that the droplet would spread along the reverse direction of micro-cone’s orientation but bounce and detach off the surface and move toward the direction of micro-cone’s orientation. To understand these interesting performances, a mathematical model is established from the perspective of force balance, and a series of numerical simulations are performed. Additionally, the relationship between the droplet motions and the micro-structural parameters, including the inclined angle, line space, and height, are studied. This work may provide useful insights into droplet controlling, anisotropic surface designing, and its applications.Investigations on incorporating an N-flanking anthracenyl moiety to [Rh(Cp*)(NHC)Cl2] complexes surprisingly led to the formation of an intramolecular C-C bond between the Cp* and anthracenyl moieties, with additional auxiliary interactions between the metal and the anthracenyl ring system. In silico modeling supports a reaction mechanism whereby Rh(η4-tetramethylfulvene) intermediates undergo metallocycloaddition and the abstraction of a chlorido ligand, affording unique cationic complexes that feature Rh centers coordinated by a nonadentate ligand with exclusively carbon donor atoms. Some Rh-C interactions were extremely weak but nevertheless exhibited covalent bonding character. These weak Rh-C interactions were readily displaced by stronger electron donors, and the nonadentate ligand reverted to the heptadentate coordination mode observed in the intermediate. As far as we are aware, this study provides the first conclusive evidence of complexes bearing a single nonadentate κ9-coordinating ligand that features only carbon donors bound to a metal center.Hydrogels are key components in several biomedical research areas such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biofabrication. Here, a novel ABA-type triblock copolymer comprising poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) as the hydrophilic A blocks and poly(2-phenethyl-2-oxazoline) as the aromatic and hydrophobic B block is introduced. Above the critical micelle concentration, the polymer self-assembles into small spherical polymer micelles with a hydrodynamic radius of approx 8-8.5 nm. Interestingly, this specific combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic aromatic moieties leads to rapid thermoresponsive inverse gelation at polymer concentrations above a critical gelation concentration (20 wt %) into a macroporous hydrogel of densely packed micelles. This hydrogel exhibited pronounced viscoelastic solid-like properties, as well as extensive shear-thinning, rapid structure recovery, and good strain resistance properties. Selleck Vorinostat Excellent 3D-printability of the hydrogel at lower temperature opens a wide range of different applications, for example, in the field of biofabrication.
