METHODS 2D pediatric echocardiographic parameters from four recent nomograms were used for statistical analysis. To assess the accuracy of the predictive models from each study, namely multivariate, linear, and nonlinear regression, mean values and 5th and 95th percentiles (μ ± 1.65σ) were calculated. A Z-score calculator was created. RESULTS Mean values and 5th and 95th percentiles have been provided for a range of BSA (0.15-2.20 m2) for each nomogram assessed in this study. Moreover, plots of Z-scores over the same range of BSA have been generated to assess trends among different studies. For most measurements from the two most recent nomograms, namely Lopez et al. and Cantinotti et al., differences were within a Z-score of 0.5 (Z-score range 0.001-1.26). Measurements from Sluysmans and Colan and Pettersen et al. were observed to diverge from Lopez et al. at the upper extremities of BSA. Differences among various nomograms emerged at lower extremes of BSA. CONCLUSIONS The two most recent echocardiographic nomograms were observed to have the most statistically similar ranges of normality. Significant deviations in ranges of normality were observed at extremes of BSA. Among the survivors, morbidity both perinatally and later in life is common. The dawn of novel technical platforms for comprehensive and sensitive analysis of protein profiles in blood has opened up new possibilities to study both health and disease with significant clinical accuracy, here used to study the preterm infant and the physiological changes of the transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. METHODS We have performed in-depth analysis of the protein profiles of 14 extremely preterm infants using longitudinal sampling. Medical variables were integrated with extensive profiling of 448 unique protein targets. Clusition.BACKGROUND Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear etiology and pathophysiology. Previous studies have indicated that the dysregulation of cytokines may be involved in the pathogenesis of ASD and that the levels of cytokines may serve as potential biomarkers of this disorder. METHODS The current study employed a family triad-based case-control design to study the levels of plasma cytokines in families with ASD (n = 45 triads) and controls (n = 38 triads) with a Human Cytokine Twenty-Five-Plex Kit. The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) was used to measure social impairment of ASD children. RESULTS After controlling for the levels of parental cytokines, we identified that interferon-α (IFN-α), interleukin-7 (IL-7), IL-8, IFN-γ-inducible protein-10, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1β were associated with ASD, and IL-8 was the only cytokine also associated with the levels of both parental cytokines in the offspring-parents regression analysis and three subdomains of SRS (social awareness, cognition, and motivations) in the children with ASD. The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that the log-transformed IL-8 level discriminated children with autism from controls with an area under the curve of 0.858 (95% confidence interval 0.777-0.939). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that IL-8 is a potential biomarker for ASD and may be involved in the pathogenesis of ASD. Reduction in early infantile anemia and newborn mortality rates is possible with easily implemented, low- to no-cost intervention such as delayed cord clamping (DCC). DCC, an effective anemia prevention strategy, requires cooperation among health providers involved in childbirth, and a participatory culture change in public health. Public intervention strategies must consider multiple factors associated with anemia listed in this review before designing intervention studies that aim to reduce anemia prevalence in infants and toddlers.
