Nine months later, she required mechanical ventilation, and subsequently the initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for a pulmonary exacerbation with septic shock. Lung transplantation in ECMO was performed with success. CONCLUSION Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of phrenic nerve injury with BAE in pediatric CF patients.BACKGROUND The implications of the feminisation of medicine, which is characterised by a growing proportion of female doctors, is a topic currently being debated worldwide. To date, however, there has been no systematic survey of the viewpoint of present and future doctors on this subject. The aim of the present study is to determine how future and present doctors view this trend in terms of its relevance to the medical profession and its present impacts. METHODS Of a total sample of 3813 people, 181 applicants for the winter term 2014, 590 medical students and 225 doctors of the UMG participated in this cross-sectional electronic questionnaire. The answers were analysed by means of the statistics program IBM SPSS Statistics 22. Open answers were qualitatively evaluated and categorised using the “Basiswissengeleitete offene Kategorienfindung” (Werner Früh) and coded for statistical analysis. RESULTS The majority of our participants favoured a balanced gender-ratio among doctors 77% of applicants, 68% of studerning the impact of feminisiation on work organisation, work satisfaction and patient care show the need for further research and action to adapt current medical work practices to the changing demographics in order to improve work satisfaction and quality of care.BACKGROUND Inflammation is one of the key components in the initiation and progression of hepatic diseases. If not treated, inflammation may cause cell dysplasia, and ultimately cancer. In the current study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities of plant isolated compound Lirioresinol B Dimethyl Ether (LBDE) extracted from the seeds of Magnolia fargesii CHENG (Magnoliaceae) against HepG2 cells as well as in BALB/C male mice. METHODS We assessed the antioxidant and anti-proliferative effects of plant compounds using DPPH assay and HepG2 cell lines. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and Diethylnitrosamine (DEN) were used to induce liver cell dysplasia followed by hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in BALB/C male mice for 12 weeks. We investigated the underlying mechanism by using histopathology and immunoblot experiments. RESULTS Intraperitoneal injection of LBDE (50 mg/kg body weight/day) inhibited CCl4-induced HCC. Free radical scavenging assay shows the strong anti-oxidant activity of LBDE. Western blot results show that LBDE down-regulated nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) by preventing the phosphorylation of I kappa B alpha (IκBα) in CCl4 treated group. LBDE also improved liver function by decreasing Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Histopathology results revealed that LBDE decreased granulomas and express normal morphology of hepatocytes. CONCLUSIONS These preliminary results show that LBDE has the potential to inhibit CCl4-induced liver cell dysplasia and prevents cancer development by regulating NFκB/COX-2 activation.BACKGROUND This study investigated the remineralisation effect of bioactive glass on artificial dentine caries. METHODS Dentine disks with artificial caries were treated with bioactive glass (group BAG), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) (group CPP-ACP), sodium fluoride glycerol (group F) or deionized water (group W). All disks were subjected to pH cycling for 28 days subsequently. The topography, microhardness and remineralisation depth of the dentine carious lesion were assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), microhardness testing and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), respectively. RESULTS AFM images indicated mineral depositions on the surface of the carious lesion in group BAG. The changes of Vickers hardness number (ΔVHN, mean ± SD) after pH cycling were 9.67 ± 3.60, 6.06 ± 3.83, 5.00 ± 2.19 and - 1.90 ± 2.09 (p  less then  0.001) in group BAG, group CPP-ACP, group F and group W, respectively. The remineralisation depth (mean ± SD) of the carious lesion in group BAG, group CPP-ACP, group F and group W were 165 ± 11 μm, 111 ± 11 μm, 75 ± 6 μm and 0 μm (p  less then  0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION Bioactive glass possessed a promising remineralisation effect on artificial dentine caries and could be a therapeutic choice for caries management.BACKGROUND Most of the patients with type 1 and V hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP) present with symptoms and signs of acute pancreatitis due to marked elevation of triglycerides, but this baby presented with a chest infection, which was later diagnosed as type V HLP on laboratory workup. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of a 1 month and 15 days old baby boy, product of 2-nd degree consanguinity admitted to a nearby hospital with complaints of refusal to feed, cough and excessive crying. On examination his heart rate was 102 beats/min, respiratory rate was 55 breaths/min and temperature was within the normal range, provisional diagnosis of Pneumonia was made. His samples were tested at our laboratory, the lipid Profile at age of 1 month 15 days showed total cholesterol (TC) of 1400 mg/dl reference range (RR  40 mg/dl) and low density cholesterol (LDL) of 200 mg/dl (RR  less then  100 mg/dl). The patient’s blood sample was grossly milky and lipemic in appearance. selleckchem A “Refrigerator test” was performed after overnight ated us to report this case so that our findings may help for a timely diagnosis of the affected patients.BACKGROUND Most randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of traditional medicine (such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), psychotherapy or behavioral therapy, and dietary interventions, etc.) have reported that they could not provide convincing evidence to support the efficacy because of the low quality of their studies. Here, we aimed to determine the underlying problems of the study quality using standards of evidence-based medicine (EBM) to evaluate the efficacy of traditional medicine. METHODS We conducted an example of meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture, a classical treatment of TCM, for treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The quality of the included studies was evaluated by using a Jadad score. RESULTS A total of 24 Chinese RCTs that enrolled 1815 patients with ICH were included. Although the results suggested that acupuncture had good efficacy for relief of neurological deficits and improvement of the activities of daily living despite the high heterogeneity of the included studies, the low quality of the included literature reduced the worthiness of the evidence.
