Under an optimal condition, a biosensor-based Mn@FeNi-S/GO electrode exhibits a high sensitivity of 8.929 μA μM-1 cm-2 and a detection limit of 8.84 nM with a wide detection range for H2O2 and excellent selectivity; also, it is capable of online monitoring H2O2 derived from apple juice and human blood serum.Cellular dynamic behaviors in organ morphogenesis and embryogenesis are affected by geometrical constraints. In this paper, we investigate how the surface topology and curvature of the underlying substrate tailor collective cell migration. An active vertex model is developed to explore the collective dynamics of coherent cells crawling on curved surfaces. We show that cells can self-organize into rich dynamic patterns including local swirling, global rotation, spiral crawling, serpentine crawling, and directed migration, depending on the interplay between cell-cell interactions and geometric constraints. Increasing substrate curvature results in higher cell-cell bending energy and thus tends to suppress local swirling and enhance density fluctuations. Substrate topology is revealed to regulate both the collective migration modes and density fluctuations of cell populations. In addition, upon increasing noise intensity, a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like ordering transition can emerge on both undevelopable and developable surfaces. This study paves the way to investigate various in vivo morphomechanics that involve surface curvature and topology.Antimetastatic activity, high selectivity and cytotoxicity for human tumor cell lines make ruthenium(ii) complexes attractive for the development of new chemotherapeutic agents for cancer treatment. In this study, cytotoxic activities and the possible mechanism of cell death induced by three ruthenium complexes were evaluated, [Ru(MIm)(bipy)(dppf)]PF6 (1), [RuCl(Im)(bipy)(dppf)]PF6 (2) and [Ru(tzdt)(bipy)(dppf)]PF6 (3). The results showed high cytotoxicity and selectivity indexes for the human triple-negative breast tumor cell line (MDA-MB-231) with IC50 value and selectivity index for complex 1 (IC50 = 0.33 ± 0.03 μM, SI = 4.48), complex 2 (IC50 = 0.80 ± 0.06 μM, SI = 2.31) and complex 3 (IC50 = 0.48 ± 0.02 μM, SI = 3.87). see more The mechanism of cell death induced in MDA-MB-231 cells, after treatment with complexes 1-3, indicated apoptosis of the cells as a consequence of the increase in the percentage of cells in the Sub-G1 phase in the cell cycle analysis, characteristic morphological changes and the presence of apoptotic cells labeled with Annexin-V. Multiple targets of action were identified for complexes 1 and 3 with an induction of DNA damage in cells treated with complexes 1 and 3, mitochondrial depolarization with a reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential, an increase in reactive oxygen species levels and increased expression levels of caspase 3 and p53. In addition, antimetastatic activities for complexes 1 and 3 were observed by inhibition of cell migration by the wound healing assay and Boyden chamber assay, as well as inhibition of angiogenesis caused by MDA-MB-231 tumor cells in the CAM model.Bovine colostrum (BC) contains bioactive proteins, such as immunoglobulin G (IgG), lactoferrin (LF) and lactoperoxidase (LP). BC was subjected to low-temperature, long-time pasteurization (LTLT, 63 °C, 30 min) or high-temperature, short-time pasteurization (HTST, 72 °C, 15 s) and spray-drying (SD), with or without γ-irradiation (GI, ∼14 kGy) to remove microbial contamination. Relative to unpasteurized liquid BC, SD plus GI increased protein denaturation by 6 and 11%, respectively, increasing to 19 and 27% after LTLT and to 48% after HTST, with no further effects after GI (all P less then 0.05). LTLT, without or with GI, resulted in 15 or 29% denaturation of IgG, compared with non-pasteurized BC, and 34 or 58% for HTST treatment (all P less then 0.05, except LTLT without GI). For IgG, only GI, not SD or LTLT, increased denaturation (30-38%, P less then 0.05) but HTST increased denaturation to 40%, with further increases after GI (60%, P less then 0.05). LTLT and HTST reduced LP levels (56 and 81% respectively) and LTLT reduced LF levels (21%), especially together with GI (47%, P less then 0.05). Denaturation of BSA, β-LgA, β-LgB and α-La were similar to IgG. Methionine, a protective amino acid against free oxygen radicals, was oxidised by LTLT + GI (P less then 0.05) while LTLT and HTST had no effect. Many anti-inflammatory proteins, including serpin anti-proteinases were highly sensitive to HTST and GI but preserved after LTLT pasteurization. LTLT, followed by SD is an optimal processing technique preserving bioactive proteins when powdered BC is used as a diet supplement for sensitive patients.Advances in nanotechnology require of robust methods to fabricate new types of nanostructured materials whose properties can be controlled at will using simple procedures. Nanoscale composites can benefit from actuation protocols that involve mutual interfacial interactions on the nanoscale. Herein, a method to create nanoscale composite thin films consisting of mesoporous cobalt ferrite (CFO) whose pore walls are nanocoated with HfO2 is presented. Porous CFO films are first prepared by sol-gel. Atomic layer deposition is subsequently used to conformally grow a HfO2 layer at the surface of the pore walls, throughout the thickness of the films. The magnetic properties of uncoated and HfO2-coated CFO mesoporous films are then modulated by applying external voltage, via magneto-ionic effects. The CFO-HfO2 composite films exhibit an enhanced magnetoelectric response. The magnetic moment at saturation of the composite increases 56% upon the application of -50 V (compared to 24% for CFO alone). Furthermore, dissimilar trends in coercivity are observed after applying -50 V, the coercivity of the composite film increases by 69% while the coercivity of the CFO alone decreases by 25%. The effects can be reversed applying suitable positive voltages. This two-oxide nanocomposite material differs from archetypical magneto-ionic architectures, in which voltage-driven ion migration is induced between fully-metallic and oxide counterparts. The synthesized material is particularly appealing to develop new types of magnetoelectric devices with a highly tunable magnetic response.
