Mitochondria play an essential role in energy synthesis and supply, thereby maintaining cellular function, survival, and energy homeostasis via mitochondria-mediated pathways, including apoptosis and mitophagy. Ginsenosides are responsible for most immunological and pharmacological activities of ginseng, a highly beneficial herb with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and neuroprotective properties. Studies have shown that ginsenosides assist in regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism, oxidative stress, biosynthesis, apoptosis, mitophagy, and the status of membrane channels, establishing mitochondria as one of their most important targets. This article reviews the regulatory effects of ginsenosides on the mitochondria and highlights their beneficial role in treating mitochondrial diseases.A 65-year-old woman was hospitalized for heart failure and pneumonia in a nearby hospital. Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and the leading cause of death worldwide. Hypertension was defined as systolic or diastolic blood pressure according to Joint National Committee 7 (JNC7) and 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Hypertension Association (ACC/AHA) rules.
The aims of this study was to determine the difference in hypertension prevalence and its risk factors using ACC/AHA rule, and compared its result with JNC7 rule.
Data were collected using two-stage stratified cluster sample of households from 2017/18 Albanian Demographic and Health Survey. Data were analyzed using the descriptive and multivariate logistic regression model.
Among 15,003 respondents aged 15-49years, the overall prevalence of hypertension was 63.48% and 16.24%, as per ACC/AHA and JNC7 rules, respectively with an absolute increase of prevalence by 47.3% (CI 46.4-48.2%). Our primary aim is to offer a new perspective to the re-creation of challenging abdominal walls and to encourage other surgeons to gain proficiency in the robotic approach. Additionally, the material cost to the technique is lower than that of self-expanding or deployable mesh reinforcements used in other laparoscopic approaches. The objective was to evaluate the relationships between multimorbidity and overall fatigue as well as fatigue subdomains in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
A cross-sectional study of a population-based cohort of patients with RA was performed. Fatigue was assessed using the Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multidimensional Questionnaire (BRAF-MDQ). Patients’ medical records were reviewed for 25 chronic comorbidities prior to the BRAF-MDQ. Linear and logistic regression models were used to estimate the differences in BRAF-MDQ total and subdomain (physical, living, cognitive, and emotional) scores associated with multimorbidity, adjusting for age, sex, disease duration, obesity, smoking, C-reactive protein, and RA autoantibodies. Higher BRAF-MDQ scores indicate greater fatigue severity.
The cohort included 192 patients, median age 62years, and median RA duration 13years. Multimorbidity was common with 93 (48%) having ≥ 2 comorbidities, and 27 (14%) having ≥ 4 comorbidities. The median BRAF-MDd help alleviate treatment-refractory fatigue in patients with RA and other rheumatic diseases.
Markers of inflammation, including crown-like structures of the breast (CLS-B) and infiltrating lymphocytes (IL), have been identified in breast tissue and associated with increased risk of breast cancer (BrCa), however most of this work has been performed in primarily non-Hispanic white women. Here, we examined whether CLS-B and IL are associated with invasive BrCa in African American (AA) women.
We assessed breast biopsies from three 5-year age-matched groups BrCa-free AA women (50 Volunteer) from the Komen Normal Tissue Bank (KTB) and AA women with a clinically-indicated biopsy diagnosed with benign breast disease (BBD) from our Detroit cohort who developed BrCa (55 BBD-cancer) or did not develop BrCa (47 BBD only, year of biopsy matched to BBD-cancer). Mean adipocyte diameter and total adipose area were estimated from digital images using the Adiposoft plugin from ImageJ. Associations between CLS-B, IL, and BrCa among KTB and Detroit biopsies were assessed using multivariable multinomial and conditional logistic regression models.
