Copyright © Nakazawa et al.A standard treatment for patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who undergo surgery, and subsequently develop local failure or intrathoracic oligo-recurrence, has not yet been established. The present study aimed to assess the feasibility of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for this subgroup of patients. Consequently, a retrospective analysis was conducted of patients with NSCLC recurrence who were treated with SBRT, and previously underwent curative surgical resection between October 2011 and October 2016. Post-SBRT survival [overall survival (OS); progression-free survival (PFS); and local control (LC)] and toxicity were analyzed. Prognostic factors for OS were identified using univariate and multivariate analysis. A total of 52 patients and 59 tumors were analyzed. The median follow-up time was 25 months (35 months for surviving patients), and median OS following salvage SBRT was 32 months. The 1- and 3-year OS rates were 84.4 and 67.8%, respectively. 1- and 3-year PFS rates were 80.8 and 58.7%, respectively. Only 4 patients (7.7%) developed local failure. Median LC was 71 months and 1- and 3-year LC rate were 97.9 and 94.9%, respectively. A total of 4 patients experienced grade 3 or higher adverse events (AEs) and two experienced grade 5 AEs (pneumonitis and hemoptysis). Central tumor location and the possibility of re-operation were independent prognostic factors for OS. The present study indicated that post-operative salvage SBRT is a promising therapeutic option for patients with NSCLC with locoregional or intrathoracic oligo-recurrence. MicroRNA (miRNA/miR) molecules have been revealed to serve in critical roles in the progression various types of cancer, and their expression level is often an important diagnostic, predictive or prognostic biomarker. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential of miRNAs as prognostic biomarkers for patients with advanced CRC. miRNA arrays were performed on CRC specimens obtained from tumors with various molecular statuses [e.g. KRAS proto-oncogene, GTPase (KRAS)/B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (BRAF)/microsatellite instability (MSI)], and their paired normal mucosal specimens. The miRNA array revealed that miR-31-5p (miR-31) was specifically upregulated in CRCs with the BRAF V600E mutation, the results of which were supported by subsequent analysis of a dataset retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, which contained information regarding 170 patients with CRC including 51 BRAF-mutant CRCs. Of our cohort of 67 patients with stage IV CRC, 15 (22%) and 4 (6%) showed KRAS and BRAF V600E mutations, respectively. Since the median miR-31 expression was 3.45 (range, 0.004-6330.531), the cut-off value was chosen as 3.5, and all tumors were categorized into two groups accordingly (high-/low-miR-31 expression). The high miR-31 expression group (n=33) was significantly associated with a poorer mortality (univariate hazard ratio=2.12; 95% confidence interval, 0.23-0.95; P=0.03) and exhibited a shorter median survival time (MST; 20.1 months) compared with the low miR-31 expression group (n=34) (MST, 38.3 months; P=0.03), indicating that miR-31 is a promising prognostic biomarker for patients with advanced CRC. The present study analyzed the indications for suitable TACE in patients with intermediate stage HCC. Additionally, it was investigated whether further TACE or switching to multi-kinase inhibitors (MKIs) was more beneficial for patients with HCC recurrence following initial TACE. The present retrospective study included 238 patients with intermediate stage HCC who were initially treated with TACE (median age, 74 years). A decision-tree analysis was employed to investigate the therapeutic effect profiles and overall survival (OS) rates. In the decision-tree analysis for OS, complete response (CR) by initial TACE was selected as the most important variable. In the decision-tree analysis for CR, less then 3 liver segments with nodule, simple nodular type and within the up-to-seven criteria were selected as the first, second and third variables associated with a high CR rate (35-64%), respectively.
