Aspirin use for cardiovascular indications is widespread despite evidence not supporting use in patients without cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study characterises aspirin prescribing among people aged ≥50 years in Ireland for primary and secondary prevention, and factors associated with prescription. This cross-sectional study includes participants from wave 3 (2014-2015) of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. GI254023X We identified participants reporting use of prescribed aspirin, other antiplatelets/anticoagulants, and doctor-diagnosed CVD (MI, angina, stroke, TIA) and other cardiovascular conditions. We examined factors associated with aspirin use for primary and secondary prevention in multivariate regression. For a subset, we also examined 10-year cardiovascular risk (using the Framingham general risk score) as a predictor of aspirin use. Among 6618 participants, the mean age was 66.9 years (SD 9.4) and 55.6% (3679) were female. Prescribed aspirin was reported by 1432 participants (21.6%), and 77.6% of aspirin users had no previous CVD. Among participants with previous CVD, 16.5% were not prescribed aspirin/another antithrombotic. This equates to 201,000 older adults nationally using aspirin for primary prevention, and 16,000 with previous CVD not prescribed an antithrombotic. Among those without CVD, older age, male sex, free health care, and more GP visits were associated with aspirin prescribing. Cardiovascular risk was significantly associated with aspirin use (adjusted relative risk 1.15, 95%CI 1.08-1.23, per 1% increase in cardiovascular risk). Almost four-fifths of people aged ≥50 years on aspirin have no previous CVD, equivalent to 201,000 adults nationally, however prescribing appears to target higher cardiovascular risk patients.Maternal smoking is associated with increased risk of smoking in the offspring. However, it remains unclear whether this association depends on the timing of exposure to maternal smoking. We investigated the association between prenatal and/or postnatal maternal smoking and offspring smoking during adolescence. Participants (N = 1661) were from the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development cohort. We identified longitudinal trajectories of maternal smoking from before pregnancy to child age 12 years using group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM). Adolescent (12-19 years) smoking trajectories were also identified using GBTM. Associations between maternal smoking and offspring smoking trajectories were estimated using multinomial logistic regressions. We used propensity score inverse probability weighting (IPW) to account for the differential distribution of maternal and familial characteristics across exposure groups. We identified four distinct groups for maternal smoking no (66.1%), decreasing (5.6%), increasing (9.5%) and persistent (18.8%) smoking, and three adolescent smoking trajectories abstinent, early-onset (before age 15) and late-onset (after age 15). In IPW-adjusted models, youth with mothers with decreasing, increasing and persistent smoking had higher risk of being early-onset smokers compared with youth with mothers in the non-smoking group. We also found that only youth whose mothers were persistent smokers had an increased risk of late-onset smoking. Regardless of timing, offspring exposure to maternal smoking is associated with increased risk of smoking during adolescence. More research is needed on how to create effective smoking cessation campaigns that span preconception, prenatal, and postnatal periods to help prevent intergenerational transmission of smoking behaviors.The aim of this study was to compare the associations between indicators of energy intake and expenditure with excess weight and obesity in women who work full-time in sedentary and less sedentary jobs. Data were from 3444 participants the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, who reported their weight, dietary intake, physical activity and occupation in 2009 (baseline), and weight in 2012 (follow-up). Participants were categorised as being in a ‘less sedentary’ or ‘sedentary’ job, based on occupational activity patterns. Odds of excess weight (BMI ≥ 25) at baseline and of being obese (BMI ≥ 30) at follow-up, by indicators of energy intake and expenditure, were compared in the two occupational groups. In multivariate analyses, high non-work sitting time and saturated fat intake were associated with increased odds of obesity at 3-year follow-up in both occupational groups. In the sedentary job group, high physical activity (in leisure and transport) was associated with a 51% reduction in odds of obesity (OR 0.49, 95%CI 0.25-0.97). In the less-sedentary job group, energy intake and high soft drink consumption were associated with markedly increased odds of obesity (OR 1.67 95%CI 1.07-2.61; OR 2.08 95%CI1.42-3.05, respectively). In this cohort of young Australian women, sedentariness at work did not markedly affect the prevalence of excess weight or obesity. Indicators of high energy intake and low energy expenditure were associated with increased odds of both excess weight and obesity, regardless of sedentariness of occupational group.The study aimed to investigate the relationships between current exclusive e-cigarette use, exclusive combustible cigarette smoking, and dual use of e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes, and insufficient sleep among U.S. adolescents. We conducted a secondary data analysis of the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey including 11,296 U.S. high school students. Current (past 30-day) tobacco use groups included exclusive e-cigarette users, exclusive combustible cigarette smokers, and dual-product users. We performed weighted unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression analyses. Insufficient sleep was defined as less then 8 h/night and less then 7 h/night. Overall, 73.4% of adolescents reported insufficient sleep less then 8 h/night. Compared with non-tobacco users, exclusive e-cigarette users were more likely to report insufficient sleep less then 8 h/night (odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95%CI = 1.12-2.14; adjusted OR [aOR] = 1.57, 95%CI = 1.01-2.43) and less then 7 h/night (OR = 1.55, 95%CI = 1.19-2.01; aOR = 1.61, 95%CI = 1.
