    Mechanical circulatory support devices (MCS) are potentially effective treatments for cardiogenic shock (CS) and are thus evaluated in several randomised controlled trials (RCTs). However, it is not clear how enrolment criteria of these RCTs apply to a real-world CS population. This study aimed to shed light on eligibility to these trials.

    Pragmatic enrolment criteria for the IABP-SHOCK II, the DanGer-SHOCK, the ECLS-SHOCK and the EURO-SHOCK trials were retrospectively applied to 1305 CS patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital between 2009 and 2019. Based on this, major enrolment criteria were identified and outcome between eligible and ineligible patients was assessed. In this study, 415 (31.8%) patients were eligible for any study. Lowest eligibility was observed for DanGer-SHOCK (11.9%) and the highest for IABP-SHOCK II (26.9%). Over all trials, inclusion criteria were more restrictive than exclusion criteria and absence of CS caused by acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was the primary reason fors high irrespective of eligibility status.

It is not known whether these events have impacted the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and disorders of brain-gut interaction (DGBI).

    An online platform evaluated the prevalence of GI symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection utilized validated questionnaires and was fully anonymized. Findings were compared with identical data acquired in 2019. The association of results with stress and anxiety was analyzed.

    Data were collected from 1896 subjects May – August 2019 to 980 non-identical subjects May – June 2020. GI symptoms were reported by 68.9% during the COVID-19 lockdown compared with 56.0% the previous year (p<0.001). The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (26.3% vs. 20.0%; p<0.001), functional dyspepsia (18.3% vs. 12.7%; p<0.001), heartburn (31.7% vs. 26.2%, p=0.002), and self-reported milk intolerance (43.5% vs. 37.8% p=0.004) was higher during the pandemic. Many individuals reported multiple symptoms. Anxiety was associated with presence of all GI symptoms. High levels of stress impacted functional dyspepsia (p=0.045) and abdominal pain (p=0.013). The presence of DGBI (p<0.001; OR 22.99), self-reported milk intolerance (p<0.001; OR 2.50), and anxiety (p<0.001; OR 2.18) was independently associated with increased GI symptoms during COVID-19 pandemic.

    To examine demographic and work characteristics of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals associated with higher burnout and to examine whether the four domains of moral resilience contribute to burnout over and above work and demographic variables.

    Healthcare professionals experience complex ethical challenges on a daily basis leading to burnout and moral distress. Measurement of moral resilience is a new and vital step in creating tailored interventions that will foster moral resilience at the bedside.

    We recently found fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients to be an effective and safe treatment after 3months. The present follow-up study investigated the efficacy and safety of FMT at 1year after treatment.

    This study included 77 of the 91 IBS patients who had responded to FMT in our previous study. AZD9291 in vitro Patients provided a fecal sample and completed five questionnaires to assess their symptoms and quality of life at 1year after FMT. The dysbiosis index (DI) and fecal bacterial profile were analyzed using a 16S rRNA gene-based DNA probe hybridization. The levels of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were determined by gas chromatography.

    There was a persistent response to FMT at 1year after treatment in 32 (86.5%) and 35 (87.5%) patients who received 30-g and 60-g FMT, respectively. In the 30-g FMT group, 12 (32.4%) and 8 (21.6%) patients showed complete remission at 1year and 3months, respectively; the corresponding numbers in the 60-g FMT group were 18 (45%) and 11 (27.5%), respectively. Abdominal symptoms and the quality of life were improved at 1year compared with after 3months. These findings were accompanied by comprehensive changes in the fecal bacterial profile and SCFAs.
